Summary
This topic contains information about the best way to
clear a clogged gutter of debris. The following steps
should be performed in order:
1 Covering the gully
2 Removing the silt from the gutter
3 Flushing the gutter
Tools
Ladder, bucket, hose, board
Step 1 - Covering the gully
Place a piece of hardboard over the outside drain or
gully to prevent any debris from entering the drain.
When you are ready to climb up to the guttering, set
the ladder up on a solid surface. This is vital for
your safety.
Step 2 - Removing the silt from the gutter
It is recommended that you use a round-end bladed
trowel to remove the debris and silt from the gutter
and that you wear rubber gloves to protect yourself
from contamination. Bear in mind that the guttering
will contain bird droppings washed off the roof along
with the associated bacteria. Use a bucket to collect
any silt or other debris that you scoop from the gutter.
Step 3 - Flushing the gutter
Pour two or three buckets of water into the top end
of the gutter to thoroughly wash away any lingering
debris.
